The problems caused by solid waste generation are of public concern. Therefore, this research aimed to evaluate the progress and challenges of the Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Program (PIGRS; Programa Integral de Gestión de Residuos Sólidos) in Mexico City, with a prospective view to 2035. Methodologically, a review of institutional databases on Mexico City’s solid waste inventory was conducted from 2006 to 2023. Subsequently, data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Empirical tests, including ANOVA, trend analysis, and time-series analysis with a projection to 2035, were used for the variable “annual solid waste generation (tons).” The research findings showed progress in reducing solid waste generation between 2022 and 2023. Furthermore, the analysis of cubic data trends indicated that solid waste generation does not follow a specific social pattern but rather exhibits variable behavior. According to projections to 2035, the curve is expected to stabilize compared with 2022 and 2023. Additionally, the roles of actors and institutions in governance were mapped, using the program as a reference point for urban sustainability. The PIGRS has made significant progress. However, much remains to be done, including implementing the program’s proposed circular economy, increasing citizen participation, and promoting the reuse of solid waste. This process represents a path full of challenges in governance, city management, citizen engagement, and public policy for achieving sustainability in solid waste generation.
