Energy security, fossil-fuel dependence, and the need for productive utilization of agricultural residues have renewed interest in biomass gasification for decentralized power and thermal applications in India. A downdraft biomass gasifier integrated with a dual-fuel internal combustion engine offers a practical route for reducing diesel consumption while using locally available biomass resources. This paper examines the design relevance, operating principles, feedstock considerations, and performance parameters governing such systems, with emphasis on brake specific fuel consumption, brake specific energy consumption, brake thermal efficiency, diesel replacement capability, and future AI-assisted performance prediction.
