The use of the adaptive XP-Endo Shaper resulted in reduced instrumentation time and better quality of obturation.
BACKGROUND: The conventional procedure using stainless steel hand files is very time-consuming and has associated disadvantages. A literature review demonstrates the effectiveness of nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) rotary files in this regard. Technological advancements have led to the development of various single-file Ni-Ti rotary systems, such as Kedo-S and XP-Endo Shaper.
AIM: To compare the instrumentation time and quality of obturation in primary molars, assessed by the Coll and Sadrian criteria, using two single-file Ni-Ti rotary systems, Kedo-S and XP-Endo Shaper.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A randomized clinical trial was conducted in children aged 4-9 years requiring single- or two-visit pulpectomy. A total of 50 primary molars were allocated into two groups of 25 each, that is, group I (Kedo-S) and group II (XP-Endo Shaper). Instrumentation time was recorded using a digital stopwatch, while the quality of obturation was assessed radiographically using the Coll and Sadrian criteria. The obtained data were subjected to statistical analysis using the Mann-Whitney U test for instrumentation time and Pearson's Chi-squared test for quality of obturation.
RESULTS: XP-Endo Shaper demonstrated a statistically significant difference in instrumentation time (p = 0.001) and a nonsignificant difference in the quality of obturation (p = 0.350). A greater percentage of optimal fills (84%) and a fewer number of voids were evident with XP-Endo Shaper.
CONCLUSION: The use of the adaptive XP-Endo Shaper resulted in reduced instrumentation time and better quality of obturation.
CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Pulpectomies performed under general anesthesia, where time is a constraint, can benefit from the use of single-file rotary systems. Considering the quality of obturation, XP-Endo Shaper performed better, with fewer voids and a greater number of optimal fills due to its adaptive technology.
