Renewable energy sources play a pivotal role in addressing the growing global demand for electricity generation while mitigating the adverse effects of conventional fossil fuel-based power generation on the environment. As countries strive to transition towards sustainable and cleaner energy systems, evaluating the renewable energy potential becomes crucial for informed decision-making and policy formulation. The Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) approach is utilized to evaluate the viability and appropriateness of different renewable energy sources for generating electricity. The TOPSIS method is utilized due to its ability to effectively handle multiple criteria and provide an exhaustive evaluation of options in accordance with their closeness to the optimal resolution. These criteria are carefully chosen to represent the key aspects that influence the successful implementation of renewable energy projects. The alternatives are wind, solar, hydropower, biomass and geothermal. The assessment criteria include the following factors: capacity (MW), gross production, annual electricity generation (GWh/yr), percentage of the total electricity generation, and generation share. Geothermal is got first rank, wind is got second rank, hydropower is got third rank, biomass is got fourth rank and solar is got lowest rank.
