William Shakespeare is renowned in English and world literature for his masterful ly crafted characters. In this paper we will explore all textual indicators of characterization in William Shakespeare’s play Richard III, used for the construction of Richard`s character, based on the method proposed by the classical narratology theorist Shlomith Rimmon-Kenan in her study Narrative fiction (1983). Rimmon-Kenan emphasizes that within a story, a character is a construct that the reader assembles based on various indicators scattered throughout the text and, when necessary, by drawing inferences about traits based on those indicators. Our goal is to examine the applicability of this method to the construction of the character of king Richard III, in order to determine whether the proposed 20th century theory of characterization in prose can be effectively applied to Shakespearean 16th century drama.
