Investigation of a Fatal Imported Case of Melioidosis - Jingmen City, Hubei Province, China, May 2026.

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS TOPIC?: Melioidosis, caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei (B. pseudomallei), is endemic in tropical coastal regions. WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: This report describes a fatal imported case of sequence type 55 (ST55) melioidosis from Hainan Province. The patient developed sepsis and multiple organ failure and died within 2 days after admission; the diagnosis was confirmed only after death. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH PRACTICE?: Clinicians in nonendemic areas should consider melioidosis in febrile travelers, obtain a thorough travel history, and use rapid polymerase chain reaction (PCR) diagnostics. Strengthening clinical awareness and laboratory capacity is essential for early detection and improved outcomes.
