Use of AI Tools in the Research Process

Researchers are trained to be rigorous and self-critical in carrying out the many activities involved in doing research, supported by an array of tools – most recently including artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. This chapter explored through a systematic review researcher perceptions and uses of AI tools in research. An excitement emerged about using the tools, with little exploration of the potential such tools might have on the integrity of the research, despite surveys reporting researcher concerns about these tools. We concluded that more inquiry is needed into the potentially negative impact of AI technologies, including how they negotiate their use, and report their efforts to ensure research integrity.
