We argue that the long-period condition that net profits are driven to zero by competition is sufficient to undermine the logic of an output supply curve and of input demand curves at the level of an individual firm. This may be claimed to justify Piero Sraffa&s;s aversion to explaining equilibrium in terms of supply and demand curves.
