Why Social Work Needs Neurodivergence

Florence Smith, Jenni Guthrie

原始摘要(英文原文)· Original abstract
This chapter examines how neurodivergence can strengthen social work practice, leadership, and organisational cultures when it is recognised and supported rather than marginalised. Using a strengths-based lens, the chapter explores how neurodivergent practitioners contribute distinctive skills, values, and ways of thinking that align closely with social work&s;s ethical commitments. Drawing on research, theory, and lived experience, it identifies areas of shared strength across neurodivergent experiences, including justice sensitivity, sustained focus, pattern recognition, creative problem-solving, and transparent communication. The chapter critically reflects on how these strengths can both enhance practice and create vulnerabilities if they are unsupported or misunderstood within demanding organisational contexts. Attention is given to the role of managers and supervisors in amplifying strengths through relational, reflexive, and neuroinclusive approaches, rather than relying on deficit-based performance expectations. The chapter also considers how recognising neurodivergent strengths can inform professional capability frameworks and improve outcomes for people who access services. Readers will gain practical insight into why a neurodivergent workforce is not only compatible with social work values but essential to a resilient, ethical, and effective profession.
