The aim of this chapter is to consider the factors contributing to illegal fire setting by young people, and also to review mainstream psychological theories and identify culturally responsive treatment strategies for First Nations youth. The importance of engagement with First Nations communities and the value of culturally relevant frameworks will be explored. An important distinction is made between legitimate firesetting for cultural and spiritual purposes in Indigenous communities and illegitimate or illegal firesetting (arson), which is often associated with other antisocial behaviours. The terms First Nations, Indigenous and Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders will be used respectfully and interchangeably throughout this chapter.
