Microbiota of the Sigmoid Colon Mucus in Complicated Forms of Diverticular Disease.

To study the specificity of the microbiota and its role in the pathogenesis of diverticular disease of the colon, we examined the mucosal microbiota of 26 diverticula from resected sigmoid colon specimens from 13 patients undergoing surgery for various inflammatory complications of the disease. Using 16S rRNA gene sequencing on the Illumina MiSeq platform, we identified some differences indicating a specific pathological process within the diverticulum. However, it remains unclear whether the microbial community triggers inflammation and the development of complications.
