Xenotransplantation is regarded as a monumental breakthrough with the potential to resolve the persistent crisis of organ shortages. However, its implementation presents formidable ethical, legal, and societal challenges, particularly regarding the risks of novel xenozoonotic infections and the potential for social stigmatization. Because public health risks associated with cross-species transmission transcend national jurisdictions, xenotransplantation inherently carries global health implications. Furthermore, animal rights and welfare concerns surrounding source and preclinical animals have recently gained significant attention. Consequently, achieving a comprehensive regulatory framework alongside broad societal acceptance in Korea is indispensable for the realization and clinical application of this novel practice.
