Desquamative gingivitis (DG) can be caused by multiple etiologic factors, such as herpes zoster (HZ) and allergic reactions to drugs. Infrequently, a patient may be affected by two different pathologic conditions simultaneously, capable of causing oral and cutaneous lesions, thereby resulting in one condition being overlooked. Since DG is a broad term that encompasses numerous conditions, many of which present with similar cutaneous features, periodontists must be aware of this possibility to provide timely and optimal patient care. The present case report seeks to highlight an atypical oral presentation in a case of suspected HZ infection in a young, systemically healthy female with a history of drug allergy.
