A study on knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) towards adult immunizations among health care professionals

Background: Immunization is a global health success story, saving millions of lives annually. However, there is limited research in India on adult vaccination, particularly across diverse vaccine categories. Our study is the first of its kind to evaluate healthcare professionals' (HCPs) knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding adult immunization across two tertiary care centers in southern India. Aims: To assess the KAP regarding Adult Immunizations among Health Care Professionals. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from June 2023 to November 2024 at Aster MIMS, Calicut, and Kottakkal, among a total of 500 HCPs (Doctors and Nurses). Data collected using a self-administered physical questionnaire. Responses were documented in Microsoft Excel, followed by data compilation and analysis. Results: = 500), 41.6% were doctors, and 58.4% were nurses. Only 7.8% of participants demonstrated excellent knowledge of adult immunization, and 15.2% had good knowledge. Hepatitis B (71.2%) and Tetanus (46.4%) were the most recognized vaccines. While 95.6% of HCPs had a positive attitude toward recommending vaccines, but only 85.4% actively motivated others to vaccinate. Notably, 48.8% expressed willingness to vaccinate, but only 35.8% had received at least one vaccine (excluding COVID-19) in the past two years, with Hepatitis B (12%) being the most commonly administered. Conclusions: This study highlights a gap between KAP related to adult immunization. Family physicians can bridge this gap by promoting awareness, addressing hesitations, and ensuring continuity of care. Systematic approaches like CME programs, reinforcement initiatives, and targeted awareness campaigns are essential to improve adult vaccine uptake in India.
