Association between polycystic ovarian syndrome and psychiatric morbidity in a rural setting: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine-metabolic condition affecting women in reproductive years. Women with PCOS often face psychiatric issues such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, negative body image, and eating disorders, which can worsen quality of life and pose treatment challenges. Despite its prevalence, psychiatric aspects are often overlooked. AIM: To assess depression, anxiety, stress, and quality of life in women with PCOS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: It is a cross-sectional study conducted for 18 months. The sample includes 102 patients who are diagnosed with PCOS. The socio-demographic questionnaire, Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), WHO Quality of Life-Brief (WHOQOL-BREF), and Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) scales were used. Statistical analysis was done using the R language. RESULTS: Mild depression was seen in 49%, and moderate in 48% on MADRS in women with PCOS. Mild anxiety was in 26.47%, moderate in 27.45% on HAM-A. Mild and moderate stress levels were seen in 31.37% and 68.62% on PSS. WHOQOL-BREF scores: domain 1 is 53.5, domain 2 is 42.8, domain 3 is 57.7, and domain 4 is 58.8, showing low scores, indicating a lower quality of life among women with PCOS. CONCLUSION: There is an increased level of depression, stress levels, anxiety, and a low quality of life in all the domains, on the WHOQOL-BREF scores, among women with PCOS.
