Need for Investing in Adolescent Mental Health in Community Settings in India.

Adolescents constitute nearly one-fifth of India's population and face a substantial and growing burden of mental health problems, much of which remains under-recognized in community settings. Drawing on vignettes and reflections from community-based research among adolescents in rural Haryana, this article illustrates the lived experiences underlying depression, anxiety, behavioral difficulties, psychotic-like experiences, and suicidal risk. Adolescents reported stressors including academic pressure, poverty, family conflict, domestic violence, caregiver substance use, bereavement, chronic illness, food insecurity, and constrained educational opportunities. Emotional distress was frequently normalized, stigma was pervasive, and awareness of professional mental health care was limited, resulting in a wide treatment gap. Our observations underscore the central role of familial, social, and structural determinants in shaping adolescent mental health trajectories. We argue that adolescence represents a critical life-course window for intervention, where relatively modest, well-targeted investments can yield long-term health, social, and economic benefits. Strengthening early identification, task-sharing approaches, school- and community-based mental health promotion, and integration of evidence-based interventions into primary care and existing community platforms are key priorities. Strategic investment in adolescent mental health within community settings is both a public health imperative and a cost-effective strategy for India's future well-being.
