Comprehensive Pharmaceutical Care and Service-Related Outcomes During Vonoprazan-Amoxicillin Dual Therapy in Elderly Patients: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the potential association between clinical pharmacist-led comprehensive pharmaceutical care and treatment outcomes in elderly patients receiving initial vonoprazan-amoxicillin dual therapy for Helicobacter pylori infection. METHODS: In this single-center retrospective cohort study, a total of 100 elderly patients (≥65 years) with H. pylori infection who received initial eradication therapy between May 2023 and May 2025 were included. Based on the level of pharmaceutical care provided during treatment, patients were classified into a control group (n=50, receiving standard medication counseling) or an observation group (n=50, receiving multi-stage, pharmacist-led comprehensive pharmaceutical care). Outcomes included adverse events, H. pylori eradication rate, medication adherence, and patient satisfaction. RESULTS: The incidence of adverse events was lower in the observation group than in the control group (12.0% vs 30.0%, P=0.027). The H. pylori eradication rate was numerically higher in the observation group (84.0% vs 74.0%, P=0.220). Medication adherence was significantly better in the observation group than in the control group (P<0.001). Overall patient satisfaction was also higher in the observation group than in the control group (86.0% vs 60.0%, P=0.007). CONCLUSION: Comprehensive pharmaceutical care during dual therapy for H. pylori infection in elderly patients was associated with fewer adverse events and improved medication adherence and patient satisfaction.
