Scribes in ancient Israel served not only as producers and interpreters of sacred texts but as the gatekeepers of cultural tradition. Their work reflects trends of their respective political situations and the power structures in which they operated. To demonstrate how this operated and survived in the Hebrew scriptures, this article looks at texts produced by royal scribes of the northern kingdom of Israel, priestly scribes of the Jerusalem temple, and the later groups of Jewish scribes who inherited these earlier texts but reconfigured them under the weight of Persian imperialism.
