Giving permission: The permissive usage of the Vietnamese verb of giving

The verb cho ‘give’ in Vietnamese has extended uses, including the permissive reading. Semantic extensions of ‘give’ have been syntactically analyzed as object control constructions in Mandarin (Lin & Huang 2015) and Cantonese (Chan 2021). In Vietnamese, I argue that ‘give’ in its permissive use diverges even further from its lexical source in lacking a recipient, instead taking only a non-finite IP complement, whose subject undergoes raising-to-object.
