Buccinidae (whelks) are recognized as a significant component of benthic ecosystems and a valuable fishery resource in the Far Eastern seas of Russia, where they represent an important commercial stock. The primary markets for this production remain the Asian countries, namely Japan, South Korea, and China. The sale of live whelks is emerging as a promising segment of the seafood market. The Asian countries – Japan, South Korea and China – remain the primary destination markets, while the sale of live whelks could become a promising segment in the fisheries product market. Unlike crabs and bivalves, protocols for the live transportation of gastropods have not yet been established. This article presents the results of experimental studies assessing the survival rate of gastropods (whelks, Buccinidae) in the northern part of the Sea of Okhotsk. Under optimal maintenance conditions – low stocking density (not exceeding a single layer) and water temperatures maintained between +1.0 and +1.5 °C, a 100% survival rate was achieved over a 10-day period with no degradation of marketable quality. Under stressful conditions, specifically high stocking density and elevated water temperatures (+1.0 to +3.4 °C), the total live weight loss over a 14-day period was 13.9%. Mortality was recorded in 9.3% of individuals. The proportion of live and viable individuals was approximately 85%, although their consumer qualities (organoleptic properties) declined. The primary stressors adversely affecting survival rates have been identified: elevated water temperatures, high stocking density, and prolonged transportation duration of whelks. To ensure the successful transport of live whelks, it is essential to maintain a low water temperature (approximately +1 °C), ensure low stocking density, and provide continuous water exchange. Validation of the effectiveness of experimental work requires multiple iterations, followed by rigorous statistical analysis of the results.
