Delirium screening documentation rates were poor, especially in those with fewer LTC and those admitted electively. These groups should be highlighted within wider targeted interventions to improve delirium screening amongst all older people in hospital.
INTRODUCTION: Multiple Long-Term Conditions (MLTC) are a recognised risk factor for delirium, but little is known about the impact of MLTC on delirium screening. This study aimed to explore the impact of MLTC on delirium screening documentation for older, hospitalised people.
METHODS: Routinely collected data extracted from electronic health records of people aged ≥75 years were analysed. Delirium screening documentation was ascertained from a dedicated electronic form; MLTC were ascertained using previously published ICD-10 codes for 60 common hospital diagnoses. Descriptive analyses were used.
RESULTS: Delirium screening documentation was completed in 42.7% (2594/6068), with higher rates in emergency (2105/4331(48.6%)) than elective admissions (489/1737(28.2%)). Increasing numbers of LTC were associated with increased odds of delirium screening documentation.
CONCLUSION: Delirium screening documentation rates were poor, especially in those with fewer LTC and those admitted electively. These groups should be highlighted within wider targeted interventions to improve delirium screening amongst all older people in hospital.
