Magnesium administration should be considered in severe or refractory hypokalemia with even normal serum magnesium; however, more research is needed to establish the evidence and take into account confounding factors. Severe hypokalemia can manifest with rhabdomyolysis, which can affect kidney function. Serum potassium value underscores total body potassium depletion since a major fraction of potassium is intracellular.
