Stepping up: A qualitative examination of youth Camogie players' perceptions of playing up an age grade.

PURPOSE: Playing up an age grade is a common phenomenon in youth Camogie, but there is no current understanding of the perception of youth players in doing so. This study aimed to utilise the athlete voice to qualitatively examine youth Camogie players' perceptions of playing up an age grade within the sport. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with adolescent club Camogie players currently playing up an age grade (n = 15; 14.4 ± 1.1 years). Interviews were audio-recorded and the transcripts were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS: Despite initial difficulties encountered, participants ultimately enjoyed playing up, reporting enhanced performance and skill development, alongside increased psychosocial competence. However, the pressures and demands of playing up, negative peer interactions, and impaired intrinsic motivation were acknowledged as perceived negatives, but strategies such as improved social inclusion, coach and older player support, and player autonomy were suggested to facilitate a better experience. CONCLUSION: The findings highlight the need to provide developmentally appropriate opportunities for youth Camogie players that support players' progression, while also being cognisant of the risks of injury and burnout. Coaches play a critical role in enabling these opportunities, but player autonomy should ultimately guide decision-making. When supported effectively, positive playing up experiences can foster competence and confidence, contributing to improved player retention.
