Barriers to and drivers for environmental, energy, and water management practices in football facilities—Toward increased sustainability in the sports community

Introduction This study explores the barriers to and drivers for implementing environmental, energy, and water management practices in football facilities, aiming to enhance sustainability within the sports community. Method Data were collected through a questionnaire distributed to representatives from Swedish municipalities and football clubs. Results The findings reveal significant barriers, including lack of access to capital, lack of time or competing priorities, and slim organizational structures. Conversely, key drivers identified include economic incentives, champion (football clubs), and top management support (municipalities). Discussion The study emphasizes the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to overcome these barriers and leverage the drivers. Additionally, it addresses the research gap in sustainability practices within the football community. The insights gained from this study contribute to the broader goal of promoting sustainable practices in sports facilities, thereby supporting the transition toward a more sustainable and circular economy.
