The growth of growing media market by 2050: demand and availability of raw materials

Introduction The use of growing media in soilless culture enables reductions in soil fumigants, enhances resource use efficiency, and increases crop yields. Global demand for growing media is rising, driven by population growth, rising incomes, changing consumer preferences, and the need to adapt to climate change. The supply and selection of raw materials are shaped by performance, economic, and environmental factors. A key question is whether sufficient viable raw materials will be available to meet this demand. This study addresses two questions: (1) What is the projected geographical consumption of growing media by 2050? and (2) What is the potential availability of raw materials for growing media by 2050, and what is their projected use in growing media production? Methods Demand projections for 2050 are based on 2022 usage data and expected increase in product demand. Five market segments are considered: food crops, ornamentals, tree nurseries, mushroom casing for button mushrooms, and the hobby market. Eight main constituent groups are analyzed: peat, coir, wood fiber, bark, compost, mineral wool, perlite, and soil/tuffs. Availability estimates are based on current industry data and trends. Results The results indicate that demand is expected to increase up to 250-290% by 2050, with particularly strong growth in the ornamental and tree nursery sectors. The most significant increases are expected in China and emerging markets in Asia, South America, and Africa. Raw materials are projected to be sufficient to meet demand in the high-availability scenario, while the low-availability scenario will require approximately 17 Mm 3 of new materials. Discussion Rather than a static forecast, this study provides an evolving tool for future improvements. Projections assume maximum production scaling, but existing industrial challenges may alter these outcomes. Consequently, investigating new raw materials and improved processing techniques for lower quality inputs is essential.
