Integrative nursing care on practice of post-operative self-care management, quality of life (QOL), and activity of daily living (ADLs) among patients undergone permanent pacemaker implantation

Background: Cardiovascular conduction disorders are a major contributor to global mortality. Permanent pacemaker implantation is an effective treatment that improves cardiac function and survival. However, patients often experience challenges related to post-operative self-care, reduced quality of life, and limitations in carrying out activities of daily living, largely due to inadequate knowledge regarding post-procedure care. Objectives: The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Integrative Nursing Care on post-operative self-care practices, quality of life, and activities of daily living. Methods: In this quasi-experimental, two-group post-test-only design, 96 participants were selected using a non-probability purposive sampling technique. Data were collected by using a self-structured self-care practice checklist, standardized tools WHOQOL-BREF for QOL, and the Barthel Index for ADLs. The Study group received Integrative Nursing Care on 2nd post-operative day by the teaching method, and the control group received hospital routine care. Post-test data collection was done at 4th week follow-up day in the outpatient department. Results: The study group showed significantly improved self-care practices (31.57±1.56; p<0.001), Quality of life across physical (58.2±6.96; p<0.001), psychological (54.17±5.96; p<0.001), social (50.57±12.50; p<0.001) and environmental domain (56.61±6.65; p<0.001) and Activity of daily living (96.57±5.93; p = 0.002). Conclusion: Integrative Nursing Care significantly improved self-care practices, Quality of life, and activity of daily living in patients after pacemaker implantation. These findings suggest that incorporating such interventions into standard care may enhance postoperative recovery and long-term outcomes for individuals with PPI.
