The adducts formed upon interaction of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) monomethyl ethers of various molar masses with ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate have been studied. Under the action of nucleophiles, these adducts release ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate, which rapidly polymerizes by the anionic mechanism, retaining the terminal group of oligo(ethylene glycol). This leads to the formation of a series of amphiphilic block copolymers with different lengths of hydrophilic and hydrophobic blocks. Three samples of these high-molecular-weight compounds were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).
