The aim of this study is to clarify the site arrangement composition of the village group headman’s houses built by the fifth Oguro, Mokuemon, a master carpenter in Echigo, through comparisons with the each previous houses and the analogous houses in Niigata prefecture. While the houses built by him share many internal characteristics, similarities with the each previous houses and the analogous houses are limited. This appears to result from the construction of the Katsura, Togo’s house, in which the former Sasagawa house served as the principal reference model.
