This study analyzed changes in residential areas in Hachioji City, located in the suburbs of a major metropolitan area, since the year 2000 using three indicators: population, number of households, and total floor area of housing. By categorizing residential areas based on their formation and analyzing 20-year changes through five-year increments, population decline was observed in 30% of areas, while household decline was limited to certain areas like central city districts. Furthermore, differences in change patterns were observed depending on the type of residential area with new towns showing the highest increase rate.
