THE CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN DAILY ACTIVITIES IN ARCHITECTS’ DISCOURSE AND COURTYARD CHARACTERISTICS IN HOUSES WITH GREEN COURTYARDS

This study aims to elucidate the relationship between courtyards and daily activities in 103 courtyard-type green residences featured in ‘Shinkenchiku Jutaku Tokushu’ from 2001 to 2024. Daily activities inferred from architects’ descriptions were extracted, categorized, and linked to courtyard characteristics (layout, degree of enclosure, spatial continuity, finishes, vegetation, etc.). Additionally, frequency analysis, co-occurrence analysis, time-series analysis, Quantification Theory Type III, and cluster analysis were carried out to identify 12 clusters and an activity–characteristic matrix. The results showed that courtyards have evolved from spaces merely for viewing to multifunctional spaces that mediate daily life, nature, and community.
