This study entitled “The Role of Visual Aids in Developing Writing Skills” was conducted with the objective of examining the impact of picture-based materials in improving English writing skills among secondary level students. The research was carried out using an action research design in which 30 Grade X students from The Glow Shine Academy, Khairahani-8, Chitwan were selected purposively as the sample. The study centered on identifying whether the use of graphic supports, including flashcards, picture charts, clue cards, and real objects, could enhance students’ performance in composition exercises such as story writing, essay writing, composing sympathy messages, and greeting card writing. Data were collected through pre-tests, two progress tests, and a post-test, along with classroom observation during 24 teaching sessions. The findings revealed notable progress in students’ writing performance following the use of illustrated materials. The average score increased from 40.26% in the pre-test to 58.66% in the post-test, showing a gain of 18.40 percentage points. The item-wise analysis also showed improvement in all writing areas, particularly in expressing sympathy through written messages and in developing story narratives. The study concludes that picture-based instruction is highly beneficial instructional material for enhancing creative writing skills at the secondary level. It is recommended that teachers should integrate visual aids into regular classroom teaching to improve students’ engagement and writing performance.
