Childhood maltreatment impacts brain development in ways that vary by adversity type, developmental timing, and genetic vulnerability for psychiatric illness—heterogeneity that conventional approaches poorly capture. We contend that normative modeling, multivariate methods, and polygenic risk scores offer complementary frameworks for parsing this variability, advancing both mechanistic insight and clinical stratification.
