The aim of the study is to determine the functional and pragmatic orientation of substantive nominalization in the German sports media text. In this paper, the methods of verbal noun formation within the framework of substantive nominalization are analyzed, and the functional and pragmatic orientation of prepositional-nominal turns resulting from substantive nominalization is determined. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that the functional and pragmatic potential of collapsed propositions formed through the process of substantive nominalization within the main utterance is being explored for the first time in sports media texts on football topics. As a result of the study, it was found that substantive nominalization performs the function of expressing temporal, modal, causal, concessive and conditional information in a sentence, supplementing detailed propositions with circumstances and additions, and also expands the semantic scope of a sentence without complicating its syntactic structure, thereby achieving content compression. Thus, the substantive nominalization in the German sports media text not only contributes to the compression of the content, but also increases the information density of the sentence, due to it, the reliability and persuasiveness of the information provided is also realized.
