The aim of the research is to identify the characteristics of song proverbial expressions that undergo linguo-creative variation in the headline complexes of newspaper and journalistic prose. The article examines the levels of linguo-creative variation of song proverbial expressions – namely, the microtext and macrotext levels – and analyzes the types of linguo-creative variation at each respective level. The scientific novelty of the study lies in developing, for the first time, a typology of linguo-creative variation of song proverbial expressions across different levels of language and text. The findings demonstrate, firstly, that all linguistic characteristics of the components of song proverbial expressions are subject to linguo-creative variation at the microtext level. Seven types of wordplay are delineated: phonetic, graphic, lexical, phraseological, word-formative, morphological, and syntactic. It was established that substitution serves as a prevalent technique for implementing various forms of wordplay. Secondly, the study revealed that when employing song proverbial expressions, the socio-cultural and genre-specific properties of the source song are subjected to creative reinterpretation at the macrotext level. Thematic-pragmatic and genre-stylistic types of linguo-creative variation were identified. It was determined that a song proverbial expression functions as a precedent sign accumulating the polycode properties of the source text.
