The aim of the work is to substantiate the relevance of studying the figurative system of non-objective painting of the early Russian avant-garde. The article systematizes and analyzes domestic and foreign critical responses regarding the non-objective painting of the first third of the 20th century. The scientific novelty lies in discovering a research perspective that has not yet been developed: namely, examining works of non-objective painting of the first third of the 20th century in terms of their belonging to a general semantic context and their inclusion in an imagery-symbolic system. As a result of the work, it was established that the tradition of denying the figurative origin inherent in works of non-figurative art, as well as the emphasis on studying the works of individual artists, do not contribute to identifying the systemic basis of domestic non-objective art and hinder the process of researching its nature and the semantics of images.
