Bilateral Cortical blindness presenting as a postoperative complication rather than initial symptom following head injury (evacuation of extradural hematoma right frontal region): A rare occurrence - Case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Unilateral epidural hematoma following head injury, causing bilateral blindness, is a rare complication occurring postoperatively, thus determining the outcome of surgery. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a rare case of unilateral frontal extradural hematoma that was operated on, and evacuation was performed. Postoperatively, the patient developed bilateral blindness. The patient was evaluated and was found to have a bilateral occipital lobe infarct. CONCLUSION: We tried to evaluate possible pathological mechanisms of acute posttraumatic cortical blindness. Most of the cases reported previously were associated with cortical blindness as an initial symptom rather than a complication following surgery.
