The Javanese house, or omah, is a spatial construct that embodies meaning, lived experience, and the identity of its inhabitants. Within the dalem (inner house), each space fosters cultural relations tied to a sense of security, acquiescence, and inner experience in everyday life. Using a qualitative method that incorporates document study, narrative inquiry, and phenomenology, dalem is examined through historical perspectives, residents’ lived experiences, and the memories and perceptions embedded within the space. The interiority of dalem emerges through the interplay of context, container, and content, integrating domestic, symbolic, and sacred functions. The Javanese philosophical principle sejatining urip – sangkan paraning dumadi (living righteously in constant remembrance of God as life’s origin and ultimate end) forms the foundation for spatial context, situating human life in harmony with the cosmos. Spatial experience within the dalem thus extends beyond its function as a container; it serves not merely as a dwelling but as a vessel for organizing life, shaping character, and reinforcing emotional and spiritual bonds. The arrangement of content in the dalem is designed to regulate familial intimacy while connecting the human realm with ancestors and the divine. Kajogan (family space) functions as the center of family activities, social interaction, moral education, and cultural rituals, symbolizing prosperity and fertility. Senthong (inner chamber) emphasizes the sacred dimension as a space for prayer, ancestral veneration, and the safeguarding of heirlooms. Serongan (side chamber), as the most personal area, preserves familial privacy while conveying the cosmological meaning of the Javanese life journey. Together, these spatial elements of dalem fulfil physical, emotional, and spiritual needs in a unified whole that affirms the core balance of Javanese family life.
