Embodied Youth Narratives: Results of a National Photovoice Project.

This youth participatory action (YPAR) research study sought to document developmental processes relevant to body-image and mental health in the lives of young people. Eighteen youth (ages 14 to 22) from three regions of the United States participated in online photovoice sessions. Data sources included journal reflections, photographs with narratives, and facilitator notes. Youth selected topics of focus and engaged in collaborative analysis. Three themes emerged: navigating Eurocentric body norms, strengths and challenges of youth development, and well-being in emerging adulthood. Participant photos and journals reflected internalized expectations about bodies and emphasized the importance of connection, community, and creative expression. Photovoice can engage in dialogue and reflection relevant to their emerging adulthood. Findings highlight the importance of youth-led storytelling in research and arts-based practice.
