This work presents the basic concepts and practical methods used in the pharmacognostic and phytochemical evaluation of medicinal plants, with particular attention to Tabernaemontana divaricata. It outlines the importance of macroscopy, microscopy, physicochemical analysis, preliminary phytochemical screening, extraction techniques, chromatographic methods, and spectroscopic tools for the identification and characterization of plant constituents. The article also provides a detailed botanical profile of T. divaricata, including its taxonomy, habitat, morphology, cultivation, chemical constituents, and traditional medicinal uses. In addition, the materials, analytical instruments, plant collection, authentication process, and preparation of leaf samples for laboratory investigation are described, forming a foundation for future studies on the isolation and evaluation of bioactive compounds from this medicinal plant.
