To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first reported case of fungal osteomyelitis after MRR. Elderly patients may have heightened risk of rare, deep infections after MRR. Surgeons considering MRR in older adults should be aware of atypical complications.
CASE: A 70-year-old woman developed subacute tibial pain and recurrent drainage months after medial meniscal root repair (MRR). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) indicated a Brodie-type metaphyseal abscess tracking from the anteromedial portal. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) identified Aspergillus versicolor. She underwent debridement with removal of retained suture and began oral voriconazole. At the 1-year follow-up, she demonstrated no evidence of residual infection and had returned to painless exercise.
CONCLUSION: To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first reported case of fungal osteomyelitis after MRR. Elderly patients may have heightened risk of rare, deep infections after MRR. Surgeons considering MRR in older adults should be aware of atypical complications.
