This study examines the history of contractual inheritance in Germany. It examines the inheritance customs of ancient Germans, analyzes medieval German legislation, and the contributions of 19th-century legal scholars. Their works formed the basis for the development of the inheritance contract institute, which was subsequently codifi ed in the German Civil Code and became widespread beyond Germany.
