Background: Social isolation and loneliness among older adults in Canada are associated with poorer health outcomes and increased mortality. The Student-Senior Isolation Prevention Partnership (SSIPP) program pairs older adults referred by physicians with medical students for regular phone calls to address perceived isolation. This study qualitatively explored older adults’ experiences with SSIPP and the perceived impact of the program on loneliness, emotional well-being, and social connection. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight seniors aged 65+ who participated in the SSIPP program for at least six months. Transcripts were thematically analyzed using an inductive approach. Themes were developed iteratively and refined collaboratively. Results: Four major themes emerged describing participants’ experiences with the SSIPP program: perceived reductions in loneliness and emotional distress, the value of human connection across generations, the development of routine and anticipation through regular calls, and reflections on the relational value of the interaction. Participants described the calls as emotionally supportive and socially meaningful, even when day-to-day routines remained unchanged. Conclusion: Participation in the SSIPP program was perceived by older adults as emotionally supportive and socially meaningful. These findings highlight the potential role of structured, student-led phone-based outreach in fostering social connection and addressing perceived loneliness among seniors.
