The relationship between Big Five personality traits and cryptocurrency engagement

This project is a meta-analysis examining the relationship between Big Five personality traits and cryptocurrency engagement. Cryptocurrency has become a prominent yet highly speculative form of financial participation, and the psychological characteristics associated with it have attracted growing research interest. Recent studies have investigated whether the traits captured by the Five-Factor Model — openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism — are associated with cryptocurrency ownership, willingness to invest, trading activity, or attitudes toward cryptocurrency. The answers, so far, have not been consistent, and no quantitative synthesis of this literature currently exists. The present study aims to address that gap through a systematic review and meta-analysis of empirical research examining associations between Big Five personality traits and cryptocurrency engagement. Eligible studies will include quantitative measures of at least one Big Five trait and at least one cryptocurrency-related outcome, and must report sufficient statistical information to permit effect size calculation. Based on the theoretical and empirical literature, openness to experience is expected to show a positive association with cryptocurrency engagement, given its links to novelty-seeking and tolerance of uncertainty. Conscientiousness, by contrast, may show a negative association, consistent with its association with impulse control and risk aversion. This study will offer a quantitative synthesis of this emerging area and contribute to a broader understanding of the personality correlates of speculative financial behaviour.
