What is known about autistic identity and belonging among racially and ethnically minoritised autistic individuals ?

Objective: The objective of this scoping review is to map the existing research exploring autistic identity and belonging in racially and ethnically minoritised individuals. A positive autistic identity has been shown to be associated with wellbeing, self-acceptance and social inclusion. Most research has focused on white populations leading to a lack of understanding about autistic identity and belonging in people who belong to ethnic minority groups. A scoping review of qualitative and quantitative research is therefore needed to map out existing evidence, explore key themes and highlight gaps in knowledge regarding the experiences of autistic racially and ethnically minoritised individuals around identity. The results of the analysis will be presented through narrative summaries and tables that will describe the characteristics and findings of the included studies.
