The Final Journey - Pathways and Implications of Home Palliative Extubation Along the Road of Life: A Scoping Review

This scoping review aims to map and synthesize the available evidence on home palliative extubation in patients at the end of life receiving invasive mechanical ventilation. The review seeks to identify the reported benefits, challenges, and implications of this practice for patients, family members, and healthcare professionals. Additionally, it will describe aspects related to care planning, patient transportation, clinical protocols, and the experiences of multidisciplinary healthcare teams involved in home palliative extubation. The review will be conducted according to the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology and reported following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). Comprehensive searches will be performed in PubMed, Web of Science Core Collection, and Scopus using validated and database-specific search strategies. The expected outcomes of this review are to provide a comprehensive synthesis of the available literature, identify current knowledge gaps, support evidence-informed clinical decision-making, and contribute to the development of future research and clinical protocols related to home palliative extubation.
