Natural England has recently published design guidelines aimed at maximising the benefits of reservoirs in the landscape while promoting biodiversity, geodiversity, heritage and public access to nature, and at the same time achieving the primary purpose of the reservoirs such as water supply, hydro-power generation or flood control. The purpose of this paper is to brief the industry on the design principles and encourage engineers to adopt the framework.
