Bacterial colonization resulting in peri-implantitis is a significant issue in dental implantology which results in an implant failure. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy and cytocompatibility of nanoparticle-based-coatings and conventional antibiotic-coatings on the titanium dental implant surfaces were compared. The determination of the cytocompatibility between human osteoblast-like cells (MG-63) was done in terms of MTT assay, cell proliferation and adhesion. AgNP coating was found to be more effective at antimicrobial efficacy against all bacteria studied (18.6±1.4 mm with S. aureus) than gentamicin (14.2±1.1 mm) and ZnO-NP (12.8±1.3 mm). Thus, data shows the nanoparticle-based coatings especially AgNPs have better antimicrobial effects with retained biocompatibility.
