Supporting education and self-care in systemic lupus erythematosus patients: a person-centred approach.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune condition characterised by fluctuating symptoms, lifelong treatment needs, and a significant psychosocial burden. This article explores the value of nurse-led education and supported self-management as essential components of high-quality lupus care. Drawing on contemporary rheumatology guidance, evidence from long-term condition management and patient-support resources, the article discusses how nurses can strengthen health literacy, promote self-efficacy, support psychological wellbeing, and improve continuity of care for people living with lupus. Practical examples are included to support clinical application, including group education content, psychosocial assessment approaches, self-efficacy measurement and strategies for identifying low health literacy. The role of voluntary organisations and digital educational resources is also considered. The article concludes that nurse-led education should be embedded within routine lupus pathways through structured service models, investment in specialist nursing development and integrated multidisciplinary support to ensure that care remains personalised, holistic and sustainable.
