Many flashy labels are available to entice athletes, coaches, and parents with promises of preventing injury and improving recovery. To support athletes in continued fitness and competition, it is critical to take a personalized approach to hydration, macro- and micronutrient intake, and supplementation. In this review, the authors aim to provide evidence for various nutrition tools to promote conversations about the safety and efficacy of each with athletes. Consuming a diet of minimally processed, predominantly whole foods offers a solid nutritional base with adequate macro- and micronutrients. Taking a personalized approach to hydration and supplementation for the athlete, environment, and sport optimizes injury prevention and improves recovery.
