Abstract Intelligent active particles are characterized by self-propulsion, directional sensing of their environment, information processing, decision making and goal-oriented self-steering. This implies, in particular, the prevalence of non-reciprocal interactions. Examples include micro- and macroscopic biological systems as well as micro-robotic systems. We focus on minimal physics-based theoretical models of intelligent dynamics, including the formation of swarms and flocks, predator-prey behaviour, and the navigation in complex environments. Avenues for future research are discussed.
